Marilyn Mable Self, 84, passed away on Sunday, April 30th, at her home of 60 years on Main Avenue in Morton, Washington while in her favorite chair. She was married to Delbert Self on December 27, 1952 and they shared 53 years together until Delbert passed in 2005.
She was born on December 14, 1932 to Harold and Hazel Milbrath. They raised Marilyn along with younger brothers Don and Robert on a farm in Pleasant Valley. She attended Mineral elementary school and Morton High School graduating in 1951.
After high school, Marilyn moved to Seattle where she worked for Boeing in different manufacturing jobs until married in 1952. Delbert was serving in the US Army at the time and stationed at Fort Lewis. While stationed and living at Fort Lewis, daughter Melinda was born in 1953. After receiving an honorable discharge from the army in 1954, Delbert and Marilyn returned to Morton where they had met and bought their one and only home. Delbert worked for Lyle Wood Products while Marilyn was a stay at home mother. In January 1955, they welcomed second daughter Deborah into the home. Once both daughters were in school, Marilyn worked for the telephone company as an operator in the 1960s. Marilyn enjoyed camping with her family especially at Mineral Lake with father Harold and her brother Robert and his family. She spent many hours driving the hills with Delbert collecting cones and later she took up oil painting and became an accomplished artist.
Marilyn is survived by her two daughters, Melinda Clevenger (Patrick), and Deborah Erskine (Chester). Five grandchildren Dr. Jennifer Demmons (Chris), Christopher Clevenger (Rachael), Kelly McGuirl (Tobey), Chester Erskine Jr., and Charles Erskine. Ten great grandchildren, Gabriel, Lauren and Logan Demmons, Samantha, Natalie, and Jack Clevenger, Avery and Braden McGuirl, Derrick and Hailee Erskine. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, both of whom were dear friends, Janice Milbrath and Sharon Milbrath, also her good friend Dave Combs.
A graveside funeral service was held Saturday, May 6th, 2017, at Morton Cemetery, with Reverend Donald Self presiding. Pallbearers were Chester, Charles and Chester Erskine Jr., Dave Combs, and Patrick and Chris Clevenger.
