Joy "Meem" Murphy, age 81, of Moss Bluff, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, October 27, 2022 in a local hospital. She was born on August 25, 1941 to parents Houston and Emily Veillon in Mamou, LA. She grew up in Mamou but eventually made Moss Bluff, LA her permanent home. She attended what was once McNeese State College and graduated in 1964. She achieved a Bachelors of arts in Elementary education and taught for 23 years before eventually retiring from Acadia Parish School District. She was also a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.
Meem was known to all as a woman with a strong personality--a pistol--- but was incredibly funny and quick-witted. She was a single mother who worked hard to support her family. She was a very strong, determined, and successful woman in any venture that she pursued.
She never really wanted to learn how to use modern technology; instead she enjoyed the simplicities of life and the outdoors. She lived on the river and always loved making memories with her grandchildren. These memories included things such as flipping over rocks to find worms for fishing and sometimes she would hand them a hammer and nails to keep them occupied. There was always something to do at Meem's house.
Meem loved to garden, cook, fish, boating, mowing her grass, teaching her young grandchildren to play penny poker, and Tom Brokaw. Meem also loved to celebrate Mardi Gras like a true cajun and never passed up a cold Coors light.
God was ever present in her life and she was very strong in her Catholic faith. She attended St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff, LA.
She is welcomed into heaven by her parents; son, Patrick Murphy; and sister, Bonita Mouhart.
Those left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Madison Daigle and husband Andrew of Lake Charles, LA, Grace Murphy and fiance Kris LeBlanc of Sulphur, LA; great-grandchild, Brady Daigle; and extended family Kami, Danny, and Lainey Bland.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff, LA at 10am on November 4, 2022 followed by a graveside service held at Old Ritchie Cemetery.
