She graduated Valedictorian of Negreet High School in 1957 and was All District and All State basketball player 1954-1957. She attended Northwestern State University before transferring to McNeese State University and graduated there in 1960. She obtained her certification in Counseling and Guidance and Master Plus 30 in 1975. Peggy was passionate about teaching and was born with a heart for giving to and helping others. She retired in 1994 with 33 years work experience in education. She touched many lives through her years of teaching and counseling in her career as an educator. After retirement she continued working, buying and selling real estate with her husband. She was a smart businesswomen and loved a good bargain.
She is survived by her husband, Julian R. Bruce of Moss Bluff; three nieces, Pam Dillard of Robeline, LA; DJuana Singletary of Marthaville, LA and Ginger Patton of Lake Charles; sister-in-law, Faye Courrage of Vinton; numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Leoda Blackwell, brother, Robert Blackwell and nephew, Robert “Bo” Blackwell.
Funeral Services will be 10am, Monday, June 18, 2018 at Hixson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff. Rev. Wilton Anthony will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday 5pm until 8pm at the funeral home. Visitation will resume Monday at 8am until time of service. Burial will follow at the Antioch Baptist Cemetery in Florein, LA with a visitation from 1:30pm until 3pm at the church.
