Dr. Bharti J. Shah, M.D.

New Rochelle, NY - Dr. Bharti J. Shah of New Rochelle, New York, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of December 22, 2019 after battling Alzheimer's dementia for several years. She is survived by her husband, Jatin; daughter, Mili Brown (Daniel); granddaughters Kaia, Rhea, and Sona; brother, Yogesh, and four sisters, Rama, Malti, Sudha, and Sandhya. She was predeceased by her eldest brother, Ramesh.

Bharti was born to Nandakrishna and Shardaben Gandhi in Surat, Gujarat, India. She was a natural beauty whose smile and dimples captivated all those in her midst. In her first year of medical school at Baroda Medical College of MS University in Baroda, India, she met the love of her life, Dr. Jatin P. Shah. While medical students, the couple enlisted in the Indian Air-Force and trained to be pilots. After a 5-year courtship, they married in 1967 and emigrated to the United States. Bharti completed her anesthesia residency at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, and practiced anesthesia for 38 years. She was a compassionate physician and strong support to her patients.

Bharti was also an avid traveler with a love of adventure, having explored more than 50 nations, and Antarctica, spanning all 7 continents. She was a devoted wife and a proud mother and grandmother. Her genuine nature and generous spirit made her a beloved friend to all in her life. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

A funeral service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel on December 25th, 2019, and a Hindu cremation ceremony will take place on December 26th at Ferncliff Cemetery. The family intends to spread her ashes in the Long Island Sound, on which their home is located, and where Bharti loved to drink afternoon tea and enjoy the waterfront.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bharti’s honor to United Hebrew Geriatric Center of New Rochelle, where Bharti was cared for in her final days with kindness and respect. https://unitedhebrewgeriatric.org/donate-now/ "
