Sylvan “Syl” Herbert Israels, 95, died peacefully at home in San Diego, CA, on Sunday, March 29, 2020, from dementia-related complications. In hospice care for just over two weeks prior to his death, Syl passed away with his beloved daughter, Danya, at his side. In addition to his daughter, he leaves behind his precious granddaughter, Larissa, and her husband, Jake. His wife Rose, whom he cherished until his last breath, predeceased him in 1966.
Syl was born in Mt. Vernon, NY, to Morris and Anna Israels, and was raised there with his sister, Mariom, in a loving home that also included his Uncle Henry and Aunt Minnie. As an infantryman during World War II, he fought his way across Europe, including in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning home as a Purple Heart recipient, Syl obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. In his subsequent professional work, he was a key player in designing components that helped see our country safely through the Cold War.
In addition to cherishing his family, Syl took an avid interest in all things technological and political. He also loved music, dancing, theater, and, above all, dogs.
In accordance with the measures in place to counter the COVID-19 pandemic, a by-invitation-only virtual funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, April 3, 2020, at Riverside Memorial Chapel in Mt. Vernon, NY.
To honor his love of dogs and his deep respect for those who help them, donations to Planned Pethood International (https://plannedpethoodinternational.org/home) in Syl’s name are welcome in lieu of flowers.
