Doris Ashley

She was born Monday, July 9, 1934, in Dale, Indiana, the daughter of Harold and Margaret (Eskridge) McCracken. Doris loved spending time with her family, especially traveling and sharing in the activities of her grandkids and great- grandkids. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed baking, sewing, and simply doing for others. Doris had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories. She was an avid college basketball fan, loved playing cards and dominos and listening to Gaither music. Doris graduated from Orleans High School in 1952 and married her high school sweetheart, Jack Ashley. Together, they owned and operated J & D Hardware Stores in Albany and Eaton. She also worked at Ball State University for twenty-two years and retired in 1998. She and Jack spent twenty winters together in their home in Largo, Florida. Doris was a member of High Street United Methodist Church. She was active in Lydia Circle, 55 Alive, her Sororities, and she was a former member of the Red Hat Society in Florida.

Survivors include her children, Patti (husband, Tom) Elliott, Tony (wife, Jennifer) Ashley, and Kristi (husband, Joe) Walker; seven grandchildren, Joshua (wife, Heather) Elliott, Jordan (wife, Jaclyn) Elliott, Jonathon Elliott, Nick (wife, Amanda) Ashley, Justin (Whitney) Ashley, Morgan (husband, Adam) Koster, and Ryan (Tori) Walker; ten great-grandchildren, Caleb Elliott, Aaron Elliott, Mia Elliott, Levi Elliott, Elijah Elliott, Jackson Ashley, Peyton Ashley, Ellie Ashley, Logan Koster, and Clayton Koster; a niece, Jane Ann (husband, Brian) Carroll; three nephews, Barry (wife, Shirley) Sanders, Steve (wife, Peggy) McCracken, and Mike (wife, Kim) McCracken; two cousins, Ann Schulz, and Daryl Brace; and numerous special friends.

Her parents, Harold and Margaret (Eskridge) McCracken; her husband, Jack Ashley, who passed away on April 4, 2019; her brother, Shirley McCracken, and her sister-in-law, Carolyn McCracken, preceded her in death.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2023, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304 with Rev. Teri Crouse officiating.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monday, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home.

In addition, there will be a service held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home, 187 East Jefferson Street, Orleans, Indiana 47452. Burial will follow in Orleans Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home.
