Frederick was born in Connersville, Indiana, to Joseph Horning and Christina (Grizzell) Horning. He dedicated 30 years of his life to working as a steel operator for Portland Forge. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army National Guard and honorably served his country during the Vietnam era. For his service and sacrifice, Frederick was awarded the Purple Heart.
Frederick was a proud Mason and a member of the American Legion, Moose Lodge, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. His service to his country and his involvement in his community were important parts of his life.
Above all, Frederick cherished his family and friends. He enjoyed camping and making memories with those he loved. He will be remembered for the time he spent surrounded by family, the friendships he made throughout his life, and the many memories he leaves behind.
Frederick is survived by his wife, Linda C. Horning; children, Sonya Trumbo (Troy), Erick Horning, and Randy Walker (Betty); his grandchildren, David Joseph “DJ” Armstrong (Nikki), Kaleb Trumbo, Willow Horning, and Kentley Musick; his great-granddaughter, Kinleigh Armstrong; his sister, Patricia Gardner (James Bratton); and his sister-in-law, Diane Horning.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Christina (Grizzell) Horning, and his siblings, Barbara Jean Karn (Olen), Bonnie (Robert) Huddleston, Ruthalee Morgan (Wayne), Douglas “Tom” Horning (Sandy), Veleria “Toots” (Harold) Tompkins, Gail Horning, Judith Polley (Jack), Aundra Potters (Robert), Terril Horning (Jewel), and Donald Horning.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Kilgore Ave., Muncie, IN 47304. The service honoring Frederick’s life will be held Friday, August 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home with the Indiana Donor Network Honor Guard and Pastor Mike Gors officiating. A burial with Military Honors will follow at Elm Ridge Memorial Park in recognition of Frederick’s service, legacy, and generosity. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Wounded Warrior Project.
