He was born on June 13, 1935, in Marion, Indiana the son of Harry O. and Mary M. (Russell) Armstrong. John was the last surviving of six children: Herbert Armstrong, Jim Armstrong, Juanita Armstrong, Janice Kem, and Harry Armstrong.
He graduated from Alexandria High in 1953 and entered the United States Navy serving on the Navasota AO106 in June 1953. After his tour in the Navy, he graduated from trade school for tool making and was employed at Borg Warner from 1962 – 1992 as a tool maker and loved his farm.
He was a man of many talents, carpentry, masonry, machinery, electrical the list goes on, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t tackle. While enjoying retirement, spending time outdoors, and traveling; he also enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends.
He was a member of Glad Tidings Church in Muncie and a member of the American Legion Post #446 Daleville.
Survivors include his daughters, Melanie (Bill) Carlin of Muncie, IN, Shanna (Ronnie) Hatton of Muncie, IN, Mary West, Yorktown, IN; son John (Radovan Hajek) Armstrong; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents and siblings, John was preceded in death by the love of his life, Virginia Mae (Brown), a daughter SuEllen Lynette Fifield, a grandson, great-granddaughter, and great-great grandson.
Services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2023, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304 with Pastor Kevin Holt and Jeff Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Ridge Memorial Park.
