She was born on Wednesday, April 22, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.
First and foremost in her life was her walk with God, the Creator, the Great Mystery. She was a devoted teacher of the Medicine Wheel and the Sacred Self, and was an ordained minister and healer. Joy was blessed with an inquiring, creative mind and independent attitude. She was passionate about life and her beliefs, and had an ongoing love for knowledge, wisdom and truth. Being a devoted student of the deeper meanings of life, she was an avid reader and researcher into various subjects such as religions, spirituality, history, herbology, health, and many other interests. She loved going to the farmers markets and walking along the river at Minnetrista. She asked that at her end she give gratitude one more time, and asks that we each spend time showing a kindness to someone in need, give love, embrace forgiveness, give our own gratitude, and above all else, that at the forefront of each day, to give praise to our Creator God and to our Mother Earth. Her desire was for each of us to think of her fondly, share a smile and pay it forward.
"Much loved special friends, Peggy White Elk and Wanda Phillips. Thank you for standing by me up to the end."
"Obstacles in the path are not obstacles... they are the path."
She is survived by her son, John David Rhoderick, Muncie, Indiana, who she loved spending time with and considered her best friend and teacher.
Joy was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Lottie Shouse, mother, Georgia Shouse-Young, and eldest son, David Bruce Rhoderick.
At her request, there will be no services and cremation will take place.
Elm Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
