She was born into a small rural Tennessee family with one brother and one sister. Her parents, Aubrey Hickey and Reba (Dunn) Hickey, were farmers in the local community. At a young age, Lewellen’s family moved to the Muncie area where she attended: Forest Park, Wilson, and Central High School, graduating in 1958.
After graduation, Lewellen worked for several years at Miller’s Fashions / Diana Shop, located in the Northwest Plaza, where she became assistant store manager. She was also a successful homemaker, who enjoyed her family.
Lewellen had a deep passion for the Church Of God on 26th street in Muncie. She was a proud member, served on the leadership team, and was secretary for over 20 years. While at the Church Of God her devotion was seen in constantly supporting, and helping those in need.
Later in life her family joined Sound the Alarm Church, which is now LifePoint Church of Muncie. While at LifePoint Church she continued her passion to help others and supported the local church, as she could.
She loved life throughout her days, enjoyed spending time outdoors, traveling, reading, baking, and most of all helping and connecting with others. Many local residents will remember her as the “Candy Lady” as every fall she would make several thousand pounds of her famous peanut brittle and fudge candy to support the Church of God, and other local charities.
Lewellen was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Reba Hickey; brother, Aubrey Jr Hickey; and her loving husband of 60 years, James Carter.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Brad); step-daughter, Debi (Ron); sister, Mildred; many grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her special nephews, nieces, and their families.
Lewellen leaves behind a great legacy of love, and dedication, that will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
