Born on September 26, 1941, in Hastings, New York, Marvin was the son of Marvin D. Gridley and Vera Irene Gridley. He grew up on a dairy farm in Central New York, where he developed the strong work ethic and practical skills that would serve him throughout his life.
Marvin graduated from Central Square High School before attending Alfred University in Alfred, New York, where he earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in Ceramic Engineering.
He devoted his professional career to the glass industry, becoming a respected leader in the field. In 1977, he moved to Muncie, Indiana, to join Ball Corporation. He later retired in 2005 as Manager of Environmental and Glass Technology for Ardaugh.
Outside of work, Marv found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid gardener who took pride in maintaining his yard and was always ready to tackle a project around the house. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and spending time outdoors. A loyal supporter of Ball State University athletics, he was especially passionate about women's sports and took great pride in following the accomplishments of student-athletes.
Marv's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his much beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Betty (née Edwards); his daughter, Shelly of Muncie; his son, Skip of Dayton, Ohio; and his beloved grandson, Jack. He is also survived by his brother, Spencer (Judy) Gridley of Sidney, New York; his sister, Sally Bendura (Mickey) of Pennellville, New York; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Marvin's wishes, no formal services will be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Ball State Foundation in support of the Gridley Family Scholarship for Women Athletes or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Marv will be remembered for his intelligence, quiet generosity, steadfast devotion to his family, and the many lives he touched throughout his career and community.
