Richard E. Ward, 93, of Muncie, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, surrounded by family at his residence. He was born on August 27, 1932, to Carl and Justine (Anderson) Ward, in St. Louis, Missouri. Richard was married to the love of his life, Shelby Adams, and she preceded him in passing on September 21, 2004.
Richard received his GED and completed 1 year at Ball State University. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1952 until 1956. Richard’s greatest achievement in life came from his time committed to the Air Force, as he was granted his ranking as 5-star general civilian. He loved classical music, bike riding, reading, and even taught himself how to play the guitar. Richard was a simple man with quiet faith — not in religion, but in something bigger than this world.
Richard is survived by his children, Jenny (Raymond “RJ”) Coy, Carla Cole, Martin Ward, and Mitch Gaar; grandchildren, Galen, Mary, Colin, Kaitlyn (Ben) Greiner. Sean (Jessica) Cole, Sarah (Joe) Cole; great-grandchildren, Rei, Kobe, Keira, Kaleb, Joe, Terra, Ari, Gabriel, Marin, Damien, and Jasmine; as well as many extended family members.
He was preceded in passing by his parents and wife, Shelby Ward.
Private family services will be held at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, at a later date.
