A faithful member of Full Gospel Temple, she found great joy in fellowship and in living out her beliefs through kindness and generosity. She was also a dedicated member of the Shepherd’s Heart and Hands organization, where she served others with a giving spirit and a caring heart.
She retired from Ball Hospital after many years of dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, commitment, and care for those around her. Even in retirement, her life remained full of activity and adventure.
She cherished time spent camping, and also had a passion for riding motorcycles, embracing the freedom of the open road. One of her greatest joys was flying with her husband, John, sharing peaceful moments together in the airplane as they looked out over the world below. More than anything, she treasured the time spent with those she loved. Her warmth, laughter, and adventurous spirit touched many lives and will be remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Richard Smart, David Smart, Curtis Smart and Sandra Smart; and a sister, Betty (Randy) Walker.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, John Westlake, and her parents.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 1:00 pm at the North Chapel of Elm Ridge Mausoleum, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana, 47304.
Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until time of service in the North Chapel of Elm Ridge Mausoleum.
