He was born in Stearns, Kentucky, on Sunday, June 9, 1935, the son of Silas Kidd and Ollie (Grant) Kidd. He married Carolyn Shane on October 7, 1959, and they celebrated sixty-one years together.
Vernal joined the Army and served during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. He was stationed at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas in the 593rd Field Artillery Battalion. He served in Europe and Germany as well. When he returned to the states, he worked for Ball Brothers Company. He later worked at Frank’s Foundry in the shell corp for over twenty years. He also worked at Ball Memorial Hospital part-time in maintenance until 1983, then full time until retirement in 2000.
Vernal liked to bowl and was on a bowling league with Ball Memorial Hospital. He was known to frequent flea markets, and was always buying lawn mowers. He was known as “Party Doll” to most everyone that knew him. He hung out at The Cop Shop and the American Legion. Vernal was an avid Pacer and Colts fan, and loved to watch NASCAR races.
Vernal is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Carolyn; son, Jeffrey Kidd (wife, Linda); daughters, Karen (Mike) Losh, Diana Kidd, and Jennifer Kidd; grandchildren, Jeffrey Ray Kidd, Joshua Kidd, Angela New, Myranda Bradbury, Brittney Kidd, Chris Porter, Jason Emenhiser, Stephanie Sherman, and Jessica Losh; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two nephews, Michael and Billy Kidd.
He was preceded in death by his son, James R. Kidd; parents, Silas and Ollie Kidd; brothers, William, Troy and Sherman Kidd; and sisters, Vera Murphy and Thelma Kidd.
Friends and family may call Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304.
Services will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Funeral Home. Reverend Andrew Phipps will officiate.
Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Elm Ridge Memorial Park with Military Honors conducted by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
