It is with sad, but joyous hearts that we announce the passing of Rex Gurley, who was born August 6, 1946, and passed away August 27, 2026, at the age of 80. Rex was the son of the late Robert E. and Mary Powell Gurley.
Rex is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Rita Byrd Gurley; daughter, Angie Sonksen and her husband Mitch; son, Christopher Gurley; grandchildren, Hayden Harville, Caleb Gurley, Jacob Gurley and Sam Sonksen; brother, Larry Gurley; sisters, Cherry Carden and Cindy Gowens and her husband Garvin. He was loved by many nieces and nephews both related by family and those who became family through his outgoing personality, generous heart, and loving spirit.
A service to celebrate Mr. Gurley will be at Roselawn Funeral Home in Murfreesboro, TN on Tuesday, Sept 1. Friends are cordially invited to visitation at 10am and the service will begin at 11 am. The burial will be Wednesday Sept 2 at 9am at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, TN
Rex served his country in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a faithful and selfless commitment that reflected the steady devotion he carried throughout his life. He was deeply devoted to his family, and his marriage of more than 58 years to Rita stood as a lasting testament to love, loyalty, and care.
A passionate, professing follower of Jesus Christ, Rex lived with a faithful spirit that guided his days and strengthened those around him. He was beloved for the way he made room for others—never meeting a stranger, always ready to listen, and able to carry on a conversation with anyone about any topic.
Rex’s warmth was often paired with an easy humor. A prankster at heart and anything but shy, he brought levity to everyday moments and left behind memories marked by laughter and affection. He was also a strong supporter of Auburn football and an avid golfer, enjoying the camaraderie and simple pleasures found in both.
Rex will be remembered as an inspirational presence—devoted, faithful, and selfless in the ways that mattered most—and as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life touched many.
