

He was born September 9, 1926, in Martinsville, Texas, to parents John D. Martin and Gracie Lee Smith Martin. He and Ila Verne Hooper were married on March 3, 1952, and enjoyed almost 60 years of marriage before her death on February 15, 2013.
Mr. Martin retired from the U.S. Air Force after more than 20 years of service. He and his family lived in many places across the United States and foreign countries where he was stationed during this career. Shortly after retirement the Martins returned to his native Nacogdoches County and have been a part of the Melrose Community during these years. Following his Air Force career, Mr. Martin had worked maintenance and as a mechanic as well as staying busy working around his place.
His survivors include his son, Vernon J. Martin and wife Terri of Melrose; grandchildren, Jamie Jared and his wife Missi of Melrose, Nolan Martin and his wife Cindy of Florence, Kentucky, Brandi Deloach and her husband Chris of Sugar Hill, Georgia, and Jessi Ward and her husband Joe of Chireno, Texas; great-grandchildren, Trevor Jared, Carli Jared, Jensen Martin, Solomon Martin, Laney Martin, and Kode Ward; and sisters, Lettie Sloan of San Augustine, Texas, Wanda Fielding of Georgia, and Linda Lee of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila V. Martin, on February 15, 2015; daughter, Eddie Jean Patterson, on Dec. 27, 2013; brothers, John Roven Martin, Royce F. Martin, Max Martin, and Darwin A. Martin; and a sister, Jimmie Joyce Briley.
Services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf's Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Interment will follow at Lower Melrose Cemetery, located on County Road 332 off Hwy. 21 in Melrose, Texas, with military rites.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
Pallbearers: Shannon Davis, Sid Pierce, Tim Martin, Mitchell Martin, Jimmy Perret, and Lackey Bradberry.
His family suggests that memorials may be offered to the Melrose Baptist Church Building Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Nacogdoches, Texas.
