Amelia Abigail (Bowers) Fleniken of Nacogdoches passed away Friday, December 7, 2018, in Longview at the age of 94. She was born April 9, 1924, in Nacogdoches to parents Isaac M. and Polly W. (Henderson) Bowers.
A graduate of Woden High School in 1942, Amelia married her husband Bert on October 10, 1946. She was a long-time member of Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches, where she attended Sunday School, and was very involved. Amelia was also a member of The Day Lillie’s Club.
She owned and operated Amelia’s Beauty Shop until the age of 92, taking care of many ladies in the area.
Mrs. Fleniken was an active woman who enjoyed living the farm life, taking care of her flower beds and tending to livestock. She also enjoyed walks at the farm and meeting up with friends to walk the mall. She made many friends over her years at the beauty shop and at church that she cared deeply about. Her greatest joy was her family and all her young great grandchildren.
Amelia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 46 years, Bert Fleniken; daughter, Brenda Sue Herd; and sister Nora “Nancy” Hutchins.
She is survived by her brother, Milburn Bowers; daughter, Debra McLemore and husband Reagan; son, Britt Fleniken and wife Beth; grandson, Noah Hayes Herd and wife Madeline; granddaughter, Sarah Herd Hassan and husband Raad; grandsons, Ian Herd and wife Elisa, Chris Fleniken and wife Emily, Jonas Herd and wife Katie Rose, and Alex Fleniken and wife Tifah; granddaughter, Karlye Fleniken; 11 great-grandchildren Rebecca, Caedmon, Arwen, Isaac, James, Eli, Titus, Brendan, Aubrey, Adley and Ellis Kate; and many other relatives and dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Carol Khoury. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers will be her son and grandsons: Britt Fleniken, Noah Herd, Ian Herd, Chris Fleniken, Jonas Herd, and Alex Fleniken.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2018, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Perritte Memorial United Methodist Church, 1025 Durst Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75964.
