Andrew William Hunt Jr.

Andrew W. Hunt, Jr., 11/8/1944 to 12/8/2020, was a sixth-generation Texan born in Nacogdoches, Texas to Andrew W. Hunt and Elizabeth Mullen Hunt. From a young age, Andy demonstrated unique mathematical talents and a desire to serve his country, both qualities that would shape his life. In Houston, Texas, where Andy grew up with his two brothers, he was President of the Student Council at Bellaire High School and Colonel of the city-wide ROTC. He graduated in 1966 from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, before serving in Vietnam.

Andy’s keen engineering mind led him to earn two graduate degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy, ultimately retiring with the rank of captain. In Groton, Connecticut, Andy worked as the Navy’s quality-control officer and oversaw the construction of nuclear submarines. He later moved to Bremerton, Washington, where he was the production officer at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Andy knew how to repair and restore any vessel in the Navy’s fleet.

Andy was a great motivator and leader, believing leaders should not expect more from their subordinates than they were prepared to give. Many will remember him for his remarkable ability to remain calm in all circumstances, even amidst great chaos. His tranquil demeanor served him well as a captain and later as a high school math and science teacher. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. A devout follower of Jesus Christ, he was a gracious man who lived a life of service.

Captain Hunt is survived by his brothers, Lacy H. Hunt and William T.C. Hunt, by his nieces Elizabeth Christine Mullen Hunt and Crawford Emmet Hunt, and his nephews, Lacy H. Hunt, III, Eugene Rees Hunt and his namesake Andrew William Hunt III. He is also survived by his great-niece, Pamela Adair Hunt.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2020, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Nacogdoches.
