

Mrs. Cates was born April 14, 1937, in Nacogdoches, Texas, to parents August Britten Langford and Patty Nelwyn Bullard Langford. She grew up in Rusk County, Texas, and was a 1955 graduate of Nacogdoches High School, later attending North Texas University.
A former resident of Pasadena, Texas, she had worked as a legal secretary at NASA. Barbara was an active member of First Baptist Church of Mount Enterprise, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and U.S. Daughters of 1812. She served on the boards of directors for Cross Roads Family Care Clinic and Rusk County Community Library in Mount Enterprise.
She was a loving mother, sister, and wife who enjoyed caring for those she loved.
Her survivors include her husband, W.A. “Austin” Cates of Mount Enterprise, Texas; daughter, Tara McKnight Schmeling and husband Steve of Magnolia, Delaware; grandchildren, Patricia Shannon McKnight of Connecticut, Rhonda Havard and husband Casey of Lufkin, Texas, and her five children, and Erik Schmeling and Kevin Schmeling, both of Magnolia, Delaware; a great-grandson, Alex Schmeling of Magnolia, Delaware; a sister, Sandra Nell Langford Howe and husband Daniel of Riverside, California; a nephew, Daniel Howe II; and a niece, Emily Nelwyn Dicely.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Langford; and brother, Curtis Wayne Langford.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Mount Enterprise with Pastor Joe Orr officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials for First Baptist Church, Rusk County Community Library, or Cross Roads Family Care Clinic.
