

Billy Joe Metteauer, 85, of Chireno, was born February 6, 1927 to William Lenox Metteauer and Emma Mast Metteauer in Chireno. He was raised by Eric and Lera Green, who he affectionately called Auntie and Uncle.
Billy Joe graduated from Chireno High School in 1944, from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science in 1947, and from Stephen F. Austin State College with a Master of Science in 1966. He was employed at Chireno Independent School District from 1952 until he retired in 1990; first as a teacher, then principal, and finally as superintendent from 1980-1990. His footsteps will forever echo down the halls of Chireno School and in the hearts of his former students.
Billy Joe married Wynona Janice Burks on September 1, 1949. Together they had four sons. He was a member of Chireno Baptist Church, a licensed pilot, and loved to fish, hunt, and spend time outdoors.
Billy Joe passed away peacefully at his home in Chireno on Sunday, September 23, 2012. He is survived by his four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Joe and wife, Pam; Richard Alan and wife, Nancy; John Earl; and James Andrew (Andy) and wife, Janna; grandchildren, Shana Michelle Metteauer Smith and husband, David; Eric Allen Metteauer and wife, Kori; Randall Norris Metteauer; Brian Earl Metteauer and wife, Angela; Cori Ann Metteauer; Chelby Nicole Metteauer; Haley Rene Metteauer; Hunter Andrew Metteauer; Raeni Blu Rodriguez; Dani Rodriguez Boulware and husband, Eric; Joshua Brown; Hannah Bonds Early and husband, Jordan; Great-grandchildren, Madison Grace Metteauer, Blaine Addison Metteauer, Kasen Eli Metteauer, Cade Pope, Alexis Lynn Boulware, and Ethan James Boulware, and many other family members, friends, and former students.
Billy Joe was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Wynona Janice Burks Metteauer, his parents, and Uncle and Auntie.
Pallbearers will be Jay Smith, Mark Lowery, Jimmy Lance Metteauer, Harold Hagle, J. C. Lee, Glenn Hill, David Burks, and Jerry Martin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be John Ragland, Durward Butler, Randy Manning, and George Stubblefield.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 5–7 PM at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home in Nacogdoches.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Sunset Chapel, Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Chireno Lower Cemetery.
