Cary Lane Reed

January 16, 1956 – June 2, 2020
Obituary of Cary Lane Reed
IN THE CARE OF

Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors

Cary Lane Reed of Nacogdoches in the presence of his son in law and daughter, Charles and Charlotte Drinkard, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in Nacogdoches at the age of 64. He was born January 16, 1956, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

Cary loved hunting, fishing, and being in the outdoors. The majority of his adulthood he lived and loved being a resident in the Appalachian Mountains of McKean County in Pennsylvania. He was an avid dog lover, greyhounds in particular. His best friend was a greyhound named Ask Her, which he had tattooed on his arm. Cary ensured Ask Her lived a very happy and loved life during her racing and retirement years. Her health and wellbeing was always his top priority, giving her a long, happy, and well cared for life. He built a reputation at the dog races for holding participants to a higher standard for how they treat their dogs. Cary’s children can recall several times when they were younger that he advocated for the animals and protested against unsafe or unethical racing tactics.

Mr. Reed was very complimentary of others, and he made others feel better when they were around him. He loved being around his grandchildren, and listening to them play.

Cary had an array of interesting professions throughout his lifetime. His animal advocacy began after witnessing animal testing during young adulthood in Pennsylvania. He worked with his ex-wife for some time in a donut shop that he always recalled was a fun and delicious job. Later in life he worked within the sanitation industry doing a variety of jobs, including cleaning foreclosed homes, and auctioning off items.

He became less active in life after August 2006 when a tree fell and permanently injured him. With less mobility he learned what his other hobbies were. One specifically was collecting and selling a large variety of knives. He enjoyed selling them after educating himself on a variety of brands, blade types, uses, and history of manufacturing companies.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his mother, Celia Effrig; and sisters, Linda Trumbauer, Catherine Yeakel, and Debra Long.

He is survived by his mother Pearl Bender; siblings Carol Cope, Cindy Leech, Paul Effrig, Susan Russel, Allison Russell, Bill Bender, Paul Bender, and Gail Bender Decaro; daughters, Crystal Reed, Micki Martin, Carrie Rock, Natisha Reed, and Charlotte Drinkard and husband Charles; son, James Reed; grandchildren, Tyler Reed, Cara Fayak, Kaynell Long, Harley Long, Cecilia Ferrufino, Khloe Drinkard, Tyson Bell, Mikyla Reed, Sadie Drinkard, Mila Reed, Callie Drinkard, and Tylee Bell; and best friend, Jack Buckles and wife Myra.

As per Mr. Reed’s wishes, his cremated remains will be scattered in the mountains of Pennsylvania.
