Catherine was born on October 5, 1926, in Cheneyville, Louisiana to Norman Lester Evans and Leona Pauline Jordan Evans and died on Saturday, March 7, 2015. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1945 and received a bachelor’s degree in home economics from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in 1949. She and John Louis Schmidt were married on September 7, 1947 and celebrated almost 61 years of marriage before his death in 2008. Catherine was a true Southern lady to the end. She had a wonderful life, always able to do the things she loved, whether it was creating beautiful needle point works of art as gifts for her family and friends or taking fantastic trips with her husband. She and John Louis made trips to New England to watch the leaves turn in the fall, enjoyed Alaskan cruises, journeyed to England and Ireland, and went on safari to Africa. She literally followed him to the ends of the earth. Her greatest enjoyments, however, came from spending time with her beloved children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Catherine was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred “Bill” Glenn; nephew, Mark Glenn, and son-in-law, Richard Johnson. Surviving her are her children, John Louis Schmidt, Jr., and wife Debbie of Anchorage, Alaska; Dena Schmidt Johnson of Nacogdoches; Cathy Schmidt Deason and husband Jay of Austin, Colorado; her brother, Charles Evans and wife Sue Ann; her grandchildren, Harrison Schmidt of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Jordan Schmidt of New Orleans, Louisiana; Richard Johnson, Jr. and wife Colleen of LaVernia, Texas; Melanie DelPercio of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Haley Deason Castillo, and husband, Freddy, of Victoria, Texas; Jennifer Johnson Tesch and husband Timm of Phoenix, Arizona; and Jana Johnson Kimbrough and husband Jared of Garrison. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren: Mallory and Hannah Kimbrough, Shelby Griffin, Warren and Ashley Nelson; and DeLano, David Joe, Freddie, and Dominique Castillo. She is also survived by nephews Dr. Stephen Glenn, Dr. David Glenn, and Chuck Evans; and nieces Leann Banks, Kelly Joslin, Tracie Borders, Marty Schmidt Taylor and Susan Schmidt Poston.
Pallbearers will be Richard Johnson, Harrison Schmidt, Jared Kimbrough, Timm Tesch, Freddie Castillo, and Warren Nelson.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Richard Baker and particularly to the kind ladies who cared for her: Liz Sitton, Mollie Williams, Maria Sparks, and LaWanna Chancey.
