He was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Nacogdoches to parents Matt David and Essie (Lee) Coats. After graduation from Nacogdoches High School, Mr. Coats served his country in the U.S. Army and also attended Stephen F. Austin State University.
Mr. Coats began working with the U.S. Post Office and retired as a supervisor following a long faithful career. He enjoyed tending cattle on his farm as well. Charles had been a longtime dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Redmon Coats, in 1991 following 40 years of marriage; along with his parents and sisters, Laverne Justice and Robbie Pickett.
Charles and Geri Long Grimes were married in 1992.
His survivors include his wife of 21 years, Geri Coats of Nacogdoches; daughter, Charla Sparks and husband Richard of Nacogdoches; daughter, Cathy Ramey and husband Gary of Daugavpils, Latvia; step-son, Perry Grimes and wife Kim of Nacogdoches; step-daughter, Holly Beall and husband James of Bryan; grandchildren, Matt Godsey and wife Julie, Carla Ramey Morgan and husband Chad, Scott Ramey, and Amber Williamson and husband Craig; great-grandchildren, Carter Morgan, Cade Williamson, and Kinley Williamson; step-grandchildren, Amanda Brown and husband Thomas, Lindsay Adams and husband Jesse, Lauren Felter and husband Doug, and Levi Grimes and wife Sascha; step-great-grandchildren, Emily Brown, Bonnie Brown, Caylee Brown, Natalie Felter, Garrett Felter, and Lillianna Grimes; brothers-in-law, Floyd Long and Archie Pickett; and sisters-in-law, Jonel Hickey, Jean Grimes and husband Jim, Marilyn Smith and husband Joe, and Carolyn Bumpass and husband Lee.
Funeral services have been set for 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church, located at 3732 NE Stallings Drive in Nacogdoches, Texas, with Pastor Paul Sevar and Dr. Allen Reed officiating.Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, located off Hwy. 21 East.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the church.
