Clyde Nelson "Shug" Barfield, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Shug was born on August 18, 1927 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to parents, Carl Henry Barfield, Sr. and Zelma Spencer Barfield.
Shug proudly served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany as a military policeman guarding supply trains. After returning to the United States, he married the love of his life, Deloris Crisp Barfield. They made their home in Houston, Texas where Shug continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as Master Sergeant after a total of 20 years.
Shug had an incredible work ethic that started in 1941 when he was one of the first delivery boys for the Daily Sentinel in Nacogdoches delivering newspapers on his bicycle. He then went on to a career with Southern Pacific Railroad in Houston retiring as Locomotive Maintenance Supervisor after 42 years of injury-free and dedicated service.
He was a model train collector and enthusiast, loved working in the yard, and enjoyed traveling with his wife after retirement. Shug’s favorite TV channel was the History Channel, his favorite movie was 'Patton' and his favorite book was the Bible. He loved God, country, and his family.
Shug was a member and deacon of North Central Baptist Church in Houston and of New Faith Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, and a member of University Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. He was a member of the VFW Post 3893 serving as chaplain in the late 90's into 2000. He was a member of the Melrose Masonic Lodge 1294 in Houston receiving his 32nd degree in 1980, and was a member of the Milam Masonic Lodge 2 A.F & A.M. in Nacogdoches where he was recognized in 2011 as a Fifty Year Mason.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl H. Barfield, Jr. and a sister, Mary Margaret Barfield Crisp. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 70 years 8 months, Deloris; his son, Clyde Nelson Barfield, Jr. and wife Janice; his daughters, Brenda Barfield Karr, Susan Barfield LaPoint and husband Steve, and Carol Barfield Freeman and husband Lamont; his grandchildren, Holli Barfield Young (Chris), Kalico Karr Leech (Cody), Amy LaPoint Engel (Matt), Amy Lee Woodward, Kara Barfield deVries, Kassidy Karr Sherrill (Kevin), Philip M. Barfield (Jennifer), and Sarah LaPoint Perkins (Ben); and 15 great grandchildren; his brother George C. Barfield, his sisters Peggy Jane Barfield Cook and Joyce Annette Barfield McSwain (Aubie); and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Hwy 21 E, Nacogdoches.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the funeral home.
