

Funeral services for Clyde Everett Sheffield will be held Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches with the Reverend Jeff McDonald officiating. Mr. Sheffield died January 5, 2017 at his home. He was born to Abner and Eliza Sheffield on May 26, 1924 in Woodville, Texas.
He graduated from Woodville High School in 1941 and joined the U. S. Army on February 18, 1943. In World War II, Clyde served with the 104th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop and saw considerable action in much of Europe during the liberation. As the driver of a reconnaissance Jeep, he was responsible for taking the lead position with his unit, drawing enemy fire, assessing the strength and position of the enemy and reporting the information to his unit. After being injured in battle and hospitalized in Paris, Clyde returned to East Texas to work toward a college degree. He attended SFA and played for the school’s first baseball team and graduated from SMU with a degree in accounting. He married the late Betty Brookshire in 1950 and they were inseparable for 53 years until her death.
Clyde was a certified public account and worked for National Cash Register and the Internal Revenue Service in North Texas as well as the Texas and Pacific Railroad in Dallas/Fort Worth before establishing a private accounting practice in Nacogdoches in 1963. He was a long-time member of the Nacogdoches Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church and served his community in several capacities including as a coach in the Nacogdoches Youth Baseball Association and as a member of the NISD Board of Trustees.
Clyde is preceded in death by his parents and his wife and is survived by his brother David Sheffield and wife Gwen of Rockport, sister Rose Ray of Corpus Christi, daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Chris Hancock of Nacogdoches, son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Beth Sheffield of Longview, grandchildren Allyson Nolan and husband Brian of Nacogdoches, Jenny Hancock of Austin and Grant Sheffield and Laura Beth Sheffield of Longview. Pallbearers will be James Fitch, Joe Max Green, Brian Nolan, Charles Reynolds, Grant Sheffield and Michael Sheffield. Honorary pallbearers will be the Regions Bank coffee group.
Visitation will be from 1:30-2:45 pm on Sunday preceding the service at First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery. The family asks that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church or Love INC
