

He was the son of Daniel Rufus and Alvie Sims Walker. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters and their spouses; Henry Elbert and Abbie Walker, Newton Armsted (NA) and Sadie Walker, Charlie and Bessie Powell, Roy and May Dell Bobbitt.
Dan married Mildred (Millie) Shoemake in 1943. Together they shared 71 years of marriage and were blessed with four sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel (Dan) L. and Bonnie Few Walker of Jasper, David and Suzanne Cooper Walker of Waxahachie, Bruce and Kathryn Tyler Walker of Beaumont, and Newton (Lewis) and Virginia (Jenny) Kelley Walker of The Woodlands. Dan and Mildred also have 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many, many other family members and friends.
Dan Walker had recently moved to Beaumont after 50 years in Nacogdoches, Texas, and 17 years in Cleveland, Texas. He was a devoted Christian and served as Sunday School Director and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland and later was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. He graduated from high school in Madisonville, Texas, and attended Sam Houston State College. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the European theater in France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. He was a Rotarian in Cleveland and Nacogdoches. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of the Tarkington Prairie Lodge Arabian Temple and the Sharon Temple and a charter member and past president of the Trinity Valley Shrine Club. He was a thirty-second degree mason.
Dan and Mildred owned multiple clothing and shoe stores in Cleveland and Nacogdoches. He was a member of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and the Piney Woods Country Club Men’s Golf Association. He enjoyed golf and continued to play into his 90’s. In 2000, Dan and Mildred took a trip to Italy with their sons and daughters (they were never daughters-in-law) and celebrated his 81st birthday.
Grandchildren include Karen Walker Kipp and her husband Kevin, Allen Walker and his wife Dana, Jennifer Tyler Spurgin and her husband John, Tyler Walker and his wife Heather, James (Jim) Walker, Thomas Walker, Clinton (Clint) Walker, Marshall Walker, Patrick (Pat) Garrett and his wife Lacey Batchman Garrett and Johnathan (John) Garrett and his wife Misti Gilstrap Garrett. Great grandchildren include Caroline Kipp, Lane Kipp, Austin Walker, Claire Walker, Tony Spurgin, Charlie Spurgin, Jack Spurgin, Annie Spurgin, Asher Garrett, Asa Garrett, Mollie Mae Garrett. There are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel in Nacogdoches. Following will be a reception at Cason Monk-Metcalf at noon.
The family is requesting that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 411 North St., Nacogdoches, TX 75961.
