David completed 10th grade and began working at the Caro Saw Mill. He then went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad Bridge Gang and retired after 43 years as a carpenter.
He was a Baptist and attended Faithview Baptist Church. David loved fishing and hunting (deer, squirrel, and birds). He always kept a small kitchen garden. For many years he bred and raised Rat Terriers and Jack Russell dogs. Little “Suzie Bell” was his favorite of the last litter and she survives him today. When the kids were small, he had hounds for hunting. His deer hunting was never the same when he had to give up his hounds. He loved to tinker with all sorts of mechanical devices. But of course, many of them didn’t work after he was finished with them and most had extra parts when his repair was complete.
David was the son of Dave Marion and Nora Phillips Dempsey. He was the youngest of 10 children. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Edward, R. E. Elmer Alton, John James E. Ferguson, A. D.; sisters, Katherine Bertie Hall, Mamie Lily Dempsey, Carrie Elizabeth Penny, Mildred D. Brown; and grandson, Hoyt Wesley Cook.
Mr. Dempsey is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Mary Sue; daughters, Sherron Lynn Cook of Etoile, Texas and Connie Sue Barbe and husband Richard of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Melissa Ann Blake Fenley of Lufkin, Tx, Angelia Lee Blake Clark of Chireno, Tx., Summer Nicole Donnell Middlebrook of Nacogdoches, Laura Joe Donnell of Nacogdoches, Luther Dale Cook of Etoile, Nora Athalia Cook of Etoile, Sheila Collett of North Carolina; seventeen great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
