Evelyn attended Appleby School through 9th grade. Her sister, Ethel Bass, taught her in grades 3 and 4. She then attended Nacogdoches High School. The summer following 10th grade she completed high school at Stephen F. Austin Demonstration School and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education at SFA.
Evelyn began her teaching career for a short time in Wanders, then taught in Woden where she fell in love with Cullis Lee King, Sr. They married in 1941. Cullis was in the Air Force for 6 yrs. and while stationed in San Angelo in 1944, their son, Cullis Lee King, Jr. (C.L.) was born. After the War was over they returned to Appleby in 1947, where their daughter Nelwyn Sue King was born. Because of their fondness of West Texas they eventually settled in Sterling City and this became home to their two children. After teaching there for many years and after the passing of her husband in 1967, Evelyn moved to Pasadena and continued teaching for 15 more years.
Retiring with 41 years of educational service, she moved back to Nacogdoches. Wherever the location, she was always faithful to her church work and dedicated to the Lord. She centered her life on her church and family and cherished the many special friends and relatives she enjoyed throughout the years. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Dorcus Sunday School Class, and the Senior Joyful Sound Choir. She was also a member of the local and state Retired Teachers Association, and enjoyed playing the piano and many games of “42”, “Canasta”, “Skip-Bo” and reading her daily bible verses.
