

Funeral services for “Butter” Whitehead will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, January 30, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with the Reverend David O’Neal officiating. Interment will follow in the Linn Flat Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richie Whitehead, Joshua Whitehead, Mark Whitehead, Anthony Williams, Toadie Duckett, Doug Clark and William Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Caver, Phil Rater and the men of Trawick Church. Visitation will be available on Sunday, January 29, 2017 from 1:00 pm – 7:30 pm with family present from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
Hugh Martin Whitehead, 82, affectionately known as “Butter,” was born September 9, 1934 to Clifford & Maggie Weatherly Whitehead of the Linn Flat Community and passed away Thursday, January 26, 2017 in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Butter was a life-long resident of Nacogdoches County, graduating from Cushing High School and Stephen F. Austin with a BS in Agriculture. He enlisted in the Army and served honorably at assignments in the US and Europe during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife Claudine owned and operated Whitehead Dairy in Linn Flat for 41 years. He was active in numerous community organizations, serving on the Cushing School Board, Linn Flat Volunteer Fire Department, Caro Water System Board and served on the Board of the Linn Flat Cemetery Association for many years. He was a member, elder and trustee of Trawick Presbyterian Church. He also dedicated himself to biblical research and study for his weekly bible study.
Butter received numerous awards and recognitions for his service and contributions to agriculture in Nacogdoches County. He was named Nacogdoches County Farm Bureau Young Farmer of the Year in 1963 and later Nacogdoches Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer. He was recognized by the Texas Dairy Herd Improvement Association for his contribution to the organization having served on the State Board from 1980-1986, holding the office of Treasurer from 1983-1986. In 2005 Butter was presented the Pete Smith Agricultural Pioneer Award

Butter was an avid supporter of local FFA and 4-H activities, serving 25 years as chairman of the Dairy Show of the Nacogdoches County Pineywoods Fair and served several as The Nacogdoches County Fair Board Chairman. He was named FFA Honorary State Farmer and was presented an Outstanding Service Award by the Nacogdoches County 4-H Organization. He also served on The Nacogdoches County Expo Center Board.
He was well known as a genuine friend to many, always eager and willing to help anyone with anything at anytime. During his years of retirement, he especially enjoyed growing a big garden so he could share with his family, friends, & neighbors.
Butter was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford & Maggie Weatherly Whitehead, brothers C.W. Whitehead, Jr., Jerald “Tad” Whitehead, and granddaughter Amanda Whitehead.
In He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Claudine Branton Whitehead; sons, Richard “Rick” Whitehead and wife Sharon, Robert “Rob” Whitehead and wife Geneva; sister, Sue Warner & husband John; Brothers, Joe Bob Whitehead & wife Joanne, Frank Whitehead & wife Betty, all of Nacogdoches, Don Whitehead & wife Delores of Mansfield, TX; grandchildren, Joshua Whitehead, Timothy Whitehead, Richie Whitehead, Chrystal Salinas, Toadie Duckett, Tracy Diaz, Kimberly McDaniel, Anthony Williams; 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Also, a special thanks to Willowbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation, Nacogdoches Medical Center staff and especially Dr. Lloyd Whitley and his wife Kristi for their care and friendship.
