

Jerry joined the United States Army in July 1946 and served for two years during World War ll. He earned the World War ll Victory Ribbon. In 1950 he joined the United States Marine Corps and served four years in Active duty and four years in Reserve. While in the Marines he received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 4 stars, United Nations Service Medal and Korean PUC.
Jerry later worked for Southwestern Bell/AT&T as a repairman in special services and retired in 1993 with 37 years.
Jerry was affectionately known to his family as “Poppa”and friends as “JJ.” He became a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
When you think of “JJ,” you can’t help think about what a hard worker he was. Jerry loved his country and grew up with good work ethics. He loved his wife, children and great grandchildren. “JJ could wire just about anything. He was good at fixing stuff and even wiring a whole house. When he had free time you could find him gardening, viewing word search puzzles or just riding around with his favorite canine watchdog friend, Lucy.
JJ is preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, G.O.; and brothers, Leroy and Louis; sister, Billie; son, Donny Craver; and watchdog, Lady.
He is survived by the love of his life, Betty; sons, Ken Murphy of Colorado, Ronnie Murphy and wife Melissa of La Marque, Tx, Marshall Murphy and wife Sherri of Baytown, Tx, and Billy Craver and wife Barbara of Nacogdoches; daughter, Karen Wingo and husband Davis of White Oak, Tx; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and many other family members and close friends.
A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel. The service will be officiated by his grandson, Rev. Rob Wingo. Interment will follow at Old North Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Lane Cox, Jerry Hand, Davis Wingo, Bobby King, Larry Wingo, Jack Hand, Pat Harris, and Robert Wingo. Roy Frio will serve as the Honorary Pallbearer.
Family and friends are invited to visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
