He attended school at Central Heights until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1967 to serve his country in the Vietnam War. He also spent time stationed in Germany, receiving his Honorable Discharge.
John worked at different jobs including drilling rigs and truck driving. He had a passion for music and telling stories about his life.
John is survived by his children Donna Stephens and Mark Stephens of Nacogdoches and Brandi Irish of Maine, brother Gary Stephens and wife Brenda, and brother Steve Whitaker and wife Sharon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life Sandra, brothers Charles Whitaker, Donald Whitaker, and sister Linda Baldwin. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on August 16th at 11AM at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Pleasant Hill VFD building.
