Larry Neil Duncan, 75, was called home on Monday, November 9, 2020 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was born to Winfred and Dorothy Brandon Duncan on Friday, June 1, 1945 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Before graduating from Nacogdoches High School, he enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served as a Reservist until 1970. In 1966 he began a thirty-nine-year career with NIBCO and fulfilled his dream of attending Stephen F. Austin State University. While working nights and attending SFA, he was actively involved in Chi Gamma Iota Fraternity for service men and the Baptist Student Union. In 1969, he married Pamela Heaton, and they began their fifty-year journey together.
Larry graduated from SFA in 1974 with a degree in Kinesiology and Business. Although his career focus was on Business, he began his life-long ministry of coaching. He coached his children and grandchildren in soccer, baseball, basketball, football, and golf. Coach Duncan would go on to guide and mentor generations of kids. Be assured he still knew every single one of your stats! Larry’s love of sports and the teaching of fundamentals of the game led to over thirty years of refereeing basketball, umpiring baseball and softball. The highlight of these years was working the official gamebook at SFA Lumberjack and Lady Jack basketball games. He was an EMT and was actively involved with the March of Dimes, Optimist Club, and the American Cancer Society.
Before retirement, he wrapped up a lifelong career in Human Resources at Cooper Power Systems.
In 2015, Larry and family journeyed across the Mississippi and settled in Madison. He spent his last years playing on the golf course with his beloved golf friends, singing in the choir at First Baptist Church Madison, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Winfred Duncan; mother, Dorothy Brandon Tillery; and stepfather, Ford Tillery. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Pamela Heaton Duncan; children: Lance Edward Duncan, Courtney Leigh Williams (Dustin), Amy Meredith Duncan, Slayton Scott Duncan (Sommer); grandchildren: Cameron Parker Duncan, Kennedy Grace Duncan, Kyra Leigh Mardis, Kendell O’Neil Mardis, Asher Elijah Williams, Harbor Jude Williams, Emerick Uriah Williams; great grandchildren: Emmorie Dawn Duncan and Eleanor May Duncan; brother, Kenneth Duncan (Carolyn) and Mary Servin (Moses); sister-in-law, Deborah Heaton McElvaney (Doyle); and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Northwood Baptist Church with a special emphasis on Project Christmas Manger Scene and their Mission Fund.
We will be having a celebration of Larry’s life on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at Northwood Baptist Church in Nacogdoches at 1:30 PM.
The Duncan family would like to give special recognition to our niece, Leslee Anderson, for her special love and devotion to her uncle.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Nacogdoches.
