

A funeral service for Larry J. Woods, 62, will be held Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at Eastside United Pentecostal Church in Nacogdoches, Texas with Rev. Ennis Fuller and Rev. Glen Morton officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Mr. Woods was born January 28, 1947 in San Augustine, Texas to Ben and Margaret Murphy Woods. He was a graduate of San Augustine High School, Stephen F. Austin State University and the Police Academy in Kilgore. He also did post-graduate work in geology. He received numerous certificates in law enforcement, including the advanced certificate from the State of Texas, of which he was extremely proud. Mr. Woods was self-employed and did investigations, historical research and land and mineral title search for various oil and gas companies. He was an avid reader, writer and researcher of non-fiction and history. He was the author of several books, Lost Mines of East Texas and Gunsmoke in the Red Lands as well as articles in various magazines and newspapers. He enjoyed his hobbies, which include traveling, reading, researching and collecting, especially anything pertaining to the Wild West. Mr. Woods and his sister Gail both enjoyed researching one of their famous ancestors, Alexander Horton, who was the Aid-de-Camp of General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto.
Mr. Woods was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Margaret Murphy Woods; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Bennie Mae Woods; maternal grandparents, Felix and Mary Murphy.
He is survived by his wife of over 32 years, Davene Patterson Woods of Nacogdoches, Texas; sister, Gail Work and husband David; nieces, Tara Beasley and husband Jason, and Amy Work; nephew, Daniel Work; great-niece, Maggie Grace Beasley; great-nephew, Connor Beasley all of Houston, Texas; father-in-law, Dave Patterson; mother-in-law, Avell Patterson; brother-in-law, John Mark Patterson and wife Karen; nephew, Johnathan Patterson all of Nacogdoches, Texas and a host of friends, relatives and special cousins.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Eastside United Pentecostal Church in Nacogdoches, Texas.
