Mrs.Spencer passed from this life Nov. 21, 2014, during a brief stay at Nacogdoches Medical Center. She was born Apr. 3, 1934, in northern Nacogdoches County to A.E. “Buster” Wilburn and Shirley Russell Wilburn. Marcil was raised in the Bogg community and attended school at Union Springs and Central Heights. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She worked with her parents on their farm and with the family dairy. She loved living in the country and resided most of her life within eyesight of the home where she was born. Marcil graduated from Central Heights High School in 1951 and later from Nacogdoches Business College. She began a 35 year career with the Texas Dept. of Human Resources at age 18 as a stenographer and retired as a social worker in 1987.
Marcil married Paul Henry Spencer on Aug. 17, 1959, and they made their home in the Pleasant Hill Community for most of their married life. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage until his death Oct. 8, 2014. Marcil and Paul were true soul mates and completely devoted to one another and their family. Marcil loved children and played a major role in raising younger cousins, nieces, and nephews in addition to her own daughter and grandchildren. She loved people, in general, and looked for “the good” in everyone. She believed in being kind, honest, and hardworking, and those were her defining traits. She loved simple, beautiful things and was an avid gardener. In her later years, after becoming homebound, Marcil enjoyed reading, watching her favorite soap operas, RFD TV, and spending time with Paul. She kept in touch with friends and relatives by cards, letters, and telephone. Marcil embodied the woman of noble character described in Proverbs 31:10-31.
Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brother-in-law, Billy Walters. She is survived by daughter, Lisha Spencer of Rusk; grandsons, Matthew Tyler of Nacogdoches and Joshua Tyler and wife, Mary, of Kilgore; granddaughter, Allison Whitton of College Station; great-granddaughter, Abigail Olivia Tyler of Kilgore; sister, Shirley Bishop and husband, Ken, of Nacogdoches; sister-in-law, Billie Walters of Nacogdoches; maternal aunts, Iva Hamilton and Yvonne Terrell of Nacogdoches; paternal aunt, Ima Gewin of Henderson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Robert Wilson, James Bishop, Jon Bishop, Noe Foxworth, Micah Buzbee, Matt Strickland, and Mike Trawick. Honorary pallbearers will be Stephanie Driver, LaTina Watts, Mechelle Roberts, and Veronica Danielson who cared for Mrs. Spencer.
