

Marilyn was born October 1, 1945, in Kingsville, Texas, to parents George Milam Simons and Mary Salyer Simons. She had been a longtime resident of the Houston area until moving to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, in 1997. She lived in Rio Rancho until recently relocating to East Texas to be near family.
Mrs. Butler was a homemaker while living in Houston and enjoyed caring for the needs of her family. After moving to New Mexico, she worked as a secretary at Rio Rancho High School and later at the Rio Rancho school district’s administration office before retiring.
She was an avid reader and also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Marilyn had a great love for her cats, as well as flowers and took pride in tending her flowers and garden.
Her survivors include her four children, Dr. James Hockenberry and wife Mary of Center, Texas, Dr. David Butler of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Claudia Butler and Courtney Butler, both of Rio Rancho; four grandchildren, Haley Hockenberry, Grant Hockenberry, Elizabeth Butler, and Alyssa Butler; special sister-like cousins, Martha Theiss and husband Jimmy of Humble, Texas, and Tissa Peterson of Rio Grande City, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Ron Butler of El Paso, Texas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Butler.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Cason Monk-Metcalf’s Sunset Chapel with Dr. Mike Ward officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
Memorials may be offered to the American Cancer Society.
