“Rod” Allen, son of John Dewey Allen and Charlotte Stowe Rider Allen (deceased), loving husband of Patricia Jewell Bullard Allen (deceased), passed away at his daughter’s home in Troy, Texas.
He is survived by his daughters Karen Bullard Allen, married to Michael Strong, Charlotte Jewell Sedillos, widow of Eduardo Sedillos and his son Rodman Francis Allen, Jr., married to Patricia Allen. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Rod Allen was originally from Connecticut, where he attended Avon Old Farm School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and then graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. He and his wife, Patricia, both worked at the Central Intelligence Agency before moving back to Connecticut.
As an efficiency expert, Rod worked for S&H Green Stamps, American Machine and Foundry, York Paper Company, and Sikorsky Aircraft. When Rod took a job for Exxon (then Esso) as Purchasing Manager, the family lived in Libya, North Africa for five years. Exxon then brought him to Houston, Texas, where he worked until his retirement in 1991.
Rod and Pat’s vacation home on Lake Nacogdoches became their retirement home, and there they delighted in teaching their grandchildren, Eduardo, Andrea, Mary and Mijamin, to fish and swim, entertaining friends and family and volunteering or donating to various charitable groups in town. Rod was an enthusiastic patron of Stephen F. Austin University’s College of Fine Arts Music Department.
After their wives died in 1994, Rod and his best friend Jimmy Seale, continued their fellowship with Christ Episcopal Church, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. In their seventies and eighties, Rod and his friend Jimmy, (who also passed away in 2014), did not slow down: they travelled abroad, happily entertained frequently, stayed important in the lives of family and friends, and enjoyed their weekly round of favorite Nacogdoches restaurants.
Rod was appreciated by all for his constant courtesy, kindness, and generosity, as well as a witty sense of humor.
His memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, 9 August 2014, at Christ Episcopal Church, on North Mound Street at Starr Avenue in Nacogdoches.
Flowers or other gifts in Rod’s name should be made to Christ Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Online memories and condolences may be offered at www.CasonMonk-Metcalf.com.
