Cheryl and Johnston family,
Last weekend we had our 55th Indiana U. Medical school reunion. I was surprised and saddened to see that Russ was listed among the deceased members of our class. As you may or may not know I considered Russ a friend for life. We were roommates for 2 years while in medical school, first in a mouse infested apartment and then in an attic apartment. We even traveled across the US stopping in a number of cities to evaluate intern ships. We did this during the summer between the third and fourth year of med school. We stopped in Des Moines , IA, Denver CO, Seattle WA, San Francisco, L.A., Phoenix AZ. and then returned home via Route 66. It was a great experience but neither of us ended up interning at any of the places just mentioned.
I looked up Russ when we were in Viet Nam and did get to see him another time when we were in officer's training in San Antonio. Though we kept in contact with each other with yearly Christmas cards, you and Russ made Bess and I very happy when you came to our home in Bloomington IN on your way home from his mother's funeral.
Russ was thought of highly by several members of our class. It is gratifying to know that he had a wonderful life with you and your family members in Nacogdoches. He was a great guy, and I'm sure a dedicated physician who cared a great deal about his patients. Though I didn't have the opportunity to see him very often after med school, believe me he was a dear friend that I will miss.
My deepest condolences to you and your family.
