

Mrs. Hughes was born March 18, 1949, in Lubbock, Texas, to parents James Don and Madeline (Thomas) Kinder. Shirley lived in Nacogdoches most of her life, formerly living in the Lubbock and Dallas areas. She enjoyed working with students in Nacogdoches ISD as a teacher’s assistant and a substitute teacher, particularly in the Special Education Department.
Shirley had a great love of flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Flora Garden Club and spent countless hours volunteering at the SFA Mast Arboretum and the Mize Azalea Gardens. Shirley was also a member of the Southwest Fern Society and enjoyed serving as a tour guide at Millard’s Crossing.
Her survivors include her husband, Roger Hughes of Nacogdoches; children, April Pool and husband Chris of Jasper, Texas, and Jason Ireland and wife Jade of Lubbock, Texas; step-children, Susan Comito and husband Dennis of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Chip Hughes of Lubbock, Texas; siblings, Donald Kinder of Finley, Oklahoma, Mark Kinder of Crandall, Texas, and Donita Zimmerman of Forney, Texas; 2 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 6 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Sabrina Kinder and Patty Humphries.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf’s Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches, with Pastor Dennis Zimmerman officiating.
