Memorial services for Steve McQueen, 64, of Mt. Enterprise, TX will be Saturday, February 9th at 11:00 am, at Bonita First United Methodist Church, Central Heights, TX where he was a member. The Reverend Rick Anderson and Reverend Charles Danheim will be officiating. Visitation will follow in the Christian Life Center. Steve passed away on Tuesday, January 15th in Houston's Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Steve was born June 30th, 1954 in Corpus Christi, TX to H.C. and Billie McQueen. As a child, he lived in California, Louisiana and Florida, moving around while his Dad was in the Navy, before settling in East Texas. He developed a love of music at an early age that would later turn into a career. Steve graduated from Joaquin High School and went on to Panola Jr. College. He would later further his education at ETBU with a degree in education in 1990.
Steve met his future wife, Becky, while at Panola Junior College in 1974 and they were married on July 17, 1976. They had one daughter, Stephenie, and last year celebrated 42 years of marriage. Steve's love of music took him on-air working for Center's KDET & Tyler's KROZ. He would later grace the airwaves again in Atlanta, TX at KPYN working the morning show, broadcasting local football games, hosting the swap shop, and entertaining families on Christmas Eve with his reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas." He had a love of life and hobbies that included cooking, photography, and hunting. Steve also had a heart for helping others.
Steve began a new career as a teacher and coach in 1991. Though he worked at several school districts, his coaching family and students in Kountze, TX always resonated with him. Steve had the gift of gab. He worked very hard to instill real life situations, scenarios and kindness with his students and did this by telling stories and making learning fun. When he wasn't teaching or coaching, you could find him entertaining the crowd by playing a good song, participating in a school skit or, simply, clowning around. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend that loved to chat about his radio days, the latest football scores, share his memories or show off his daughter's catering events. He will forever be an educator, entertainer and storyteller. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents A.E. and Evie Wagstaff and step brother Jody Hooper.
Steve is survived by his loving wife Becky of Mt. Enterprise, TX; daughter, Stephenie Gerhardt of Plano; sisters, Brenda Perez of Center, TX and Shelia Bozeman of Carthage, TX along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Steve's honor at either The Mt. Enterprise Library, for their reading program, or Bonita United Method Church for their reading, children and after school programs. Information below:
