

Vernice Lavon Strong of Nacogdoches passed away August 22, 2020, in Nacogdoches at the age of 87. She was born February 14, 1933, in Garrison to parents Samuel Jewel Phillips and Minnie Ivy (Clifton) Phillips.
A life-long resident of East Texas, Mrs. Strong was a graduate of Garrison High School where she played on the basketball team. She was a self-taught painter and quilter. She taught freelance painting classes in her free time. She even won ribbons for her art entered into contests.
Vernice was a proud gardener whose yard always looked perfect. Her yard would often win her Yard of the Month contests. She attended Stallings Drive Church of Christ.
Mrs. Strong was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years, Joe Buck Strong; sister, Nada Jean Hardy; and brother, A.W. Phillips.
She is survived by her daughter, Ronna Sparks and husband Clell; son, Terry Strong and wife Kathy; daughter, Karla Kirby and husband David; son, Philip Strong and wife Donna; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service was held by the family at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at Sunset Memorial Park officiated by Pastor Philip Strong.
