

Mrs. Montgomery grew up in Port Arthur where she graduated from high school. After attending Lamar University for two years she transferred to Sam Houston State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Later, she received a Master of Arts degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
While a student at Sam Houston she met Melvin Montgomery. Both were members of the trombone section in the Sam Houston Bearcat Band. Their musical relationship led to their marriage on May 22, 1948 in Port Arthur. Following their marriage they both became teachers in the Port Arthur ISD. Virginia followed a teaching career as a Language Arts teacher for 35 years in Bridge City, Port Arthur, Snyder, and Nacogdoches school systems.
Virginia, lovingly known as Jenny, was a lover of nature, it’s beauties and it’s creatures. Her hobbies included gardening, bird watching, growing butterflies, crafts, reading and travel. She was a longtime member and officer of the Pines Garden Club, the Nacogdoches Retired Teachers Association and Texas State Teachers Association. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over forty years and loved attending the Open Door Sunday School Class.
