Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Lora. Together they had three children: Carol (Pat), Robert (Anjali) and Steven (Sophia), nine grandchildren: Alyson, Brian, Emily, Julie, Erin, Jared, Melissa, Rebecca, and Joel, and twenty-six great grandchildren.
Charlie was born in Eppelsheim, Germany, emigrating to the United States in 1938. He grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan in New York City. He graduated early from high school to join the Army, serving in the Pacific in Guam and later in Korea. After active duty he attended college at New York University, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor’ Degree in Civil Engineering and subsequently earned his Master’s Degree in that same field.
Charlie and Lora started dating in 1948 and married June 8, 1952. They moved to the growing suburb of Queens where they raised their family and built his general contracting business. Many of the structures he built stand today, including the terminal at MacArthur Airport, the labs at Brookhaven, and the Mikvahs in Kew Gardens Hills and Crown Heights.
A workaholic that nobody thought would ever retire, he finally did in the early 1990’s, and Lora and Charles moved to Naples, Florida. There he found a love for the game of tennis. He played the game right up until one week before his death.
The family invites you to join us for the funeral service on Monday, January 15 at 11:00 AM at Hodges Funeral Home, 525 11th Avenue North, Naples, Florida 34108.
