Gary Wolter, a deeply respected and admired man whose life was defined by kindness, generosity, craftsmanship, dedication, and strength, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. His legacy reaches far beyond family and friends — touching the lives of countless people through his life’s work and the communities he helped build.
Born on May 15, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Gary was one of five children raised in a close-knit family grounded in strong faith and values, resilience, and a steadfast work ethic. That spirit showed itself early — as a boy, Gary organized his neighborhood friends to help run his multiple paper routes, an early hint of the entrepreneur and natural leader he would become. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilee, in 1960.
After studying carpentry at Milwaukee Area Technical College, Gary co-founded Wolter Brothers Carpenter Contractors at just 23 years old. In 1968, he and his brother Ron expanded the venture into Wolter Brothers Builders, which grew over the next 50 years into one of southeastern Wisconsin’s most respected residential construction companies. His company built more than 3,300 homes — focused primarily on high quality mid-priced homes — for generations of families across the Milwaukee area. Gary’s innovative model home designs, which featured customizable floor plans, earned the company an enduring reputation for expert craftsmanship and integrity-driven business practices, respected by clients and competitors alike.
In 1984, Gary relocated to Southwest Florida and founded The Wolter Group, turning his vision toward luxury custom homes on Sanibel and Captiva Islands and the surrounding areas. He had a unique ability to see the potential in building sites and create a distinct and spectacular home for clients desiring the Florida life-style. His passion for design and building never dimmed — he remained actively involved in construction and renovations for most of his life, a self-made man who never stopped creating.
Gary was a creative visionary with a rare gift for connecting with people from every walk of life. Known for his thoughtful nature and the warmth he extended to everyone he met, he built lasting friendships and professional relationships throughout his life. He was a man of few harsh words and great generosity of spirit. He was always “the man” for his family and friends and it hard to understate the impact he had on them.
As hard as Gary worked building homes and dreams for others, he made time for the adventures and passions that brought him joy. He was an avid collector of vintage cars, a Harley Davidson motorcyclist and motorhome traveler who explored the country coast to coast, and a boater who navigated the lakes and rivers of Wisconsin and the waterways of Florida and beyond. He shared these adventures generously with family and friends. He traveled the world with Marilee, checking off her bucket list of destinations.
Gary is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 66 years, Marilee (Weber) Wolter; his devoted children Rhonda (William) Rowland of Atlanta, Georgia, Todd Wolter of Fort Myers, Florida, and Renae (David Siff) Wolter of Atlanta, Georgia; and his cherished grandchildren Lauren and Michael Wolter of Fort Myers, Trevor and Schyler Rowland, and Gabriel Siff of Atlanta. He is also survived by his beloved siblings Judy (William) Rawlins of Wisconsin and Dennis (Holly) Wolter of North Carolina, as well as nieces and nephews and numerous lifelong friends and colleagues whose lives he touched in ways both large and small.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Louise (née Wittkopp) Wolter; his brother Ronald (Diane) Wolter; his sister Joan Large; and his grandson Collin Wolter.
Builder of dreams. Beloved husband, father, and grandfather. A self-made man whose legacy will endure in the homes he built and the hearts he touched.
