A life-long resident of Florida, Gladys (94) the Daughter of Matthew and Gertrude Butler was raised in Deep Lake, FL, growing up around her Grandparents, Uncle Clyde, Aunt Edith and their children Betty Jo, Juanita, Birdie Mae, Alton and Buster of whom she has recounted many happy memories.
She met and married her High School sweetheart, Heyward Smith on November 21, 1941 and raised four beautiful children, Malcolm, Patsy, Harvey and Danny.
As a Commercial Fishing Family, Gladys spent many days and nights on the water in the Ten Thousand Islands and throughout the Florida Keys. She enjoyed living the outdoor life with her Husband and Family fishing, hunting and camping.
After raising their family, Gladys and Heyward owned and operated Janes restaurant and country store in Copeland where patrons became like family and where friends and relatives would often stop in to visit. She was not only called “Granny” by her Grandchildren but by many who knew her, she loved to be gathered with her family and friends.
Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church in Everglades City, FL. She has lived a very long and blessed life. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Her passion was organic gardening, she enjoyed crocheting, painting and was an avid reader.
Gladys was predeceased by her Husband, Heyward Malcolm Smith Sr.; Daughter, Patricia (Patsy) Louise Smith; Sons, Heyward Malcolm Smith Jr., Harvey Allen Smith Sr., and three Grandchildren Theodore, Vicki and Gordon.
She is survived by her Son- Harley Daniel (Danny) Smith, 8 Grandchildren -Gary, Keith and Sherry, Debbie and Cindy, Harvey Jr., Judy and Kim, 15 Great Grandchildren and many Great-Great Grandchildren.
