Joseph (Joe) Hubbard Price died peacefully at NCH in Naples, Florida, surrounded by family, on June 20, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born January 31, 1939, to Jule and A. J. Price in Montgomery, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama where he was president of the SAE Fraternity, elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and first in his class in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1964, he graduated from Harvard Law School where he was awarded a Knox Scholarship to spend a year at the London School of Economics.
From 1965 to 1967 he served as an Army Officer in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star. Upon discharge, he served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. During his legal career he was a partner at Leva, Hawes, Symington, Martin and Oppenheimer, Vice-President for Insurance at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and for 22 years was a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, specializing in international trade law.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Club of Washington, a Commandeur in the D.C. Chapter of the Commanderie de Bordeaux, a member of Hole in the Wall Golf Club and La Playa Beach Club in Naples, a parishioner at St. William Catholic Church, and a Knight of the Order of Malta.
His first marriage to Cynthia R. Price ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Courtney M. Price; his children, Victoria Connors (Steve), Ramsey Price (Clara); his stepchildren, Courtney Walsh Phleger (Peter), Harley Walsh (Lindsay); his grandchildren, Joseph Connors, Stephen Connors, Isabel Price-Cabezas, Alexander Price-Cabezas, Atherton Phleger (Kelsea), Harley Phleger, Tilman Phleger, Tess Phleger, Lillian Walsh, Courtney Frances Walsh, and Peter Walsh; and his sister, Jean Anne Wiener (Lee).
The funeral service will be at St. Williams Catholic Church on July 1 at 11am followed by a reception at Trio’s at Moorings Park Original Campus. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in his memory to St. William Catholic Church or Hope for Haiti.
The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to the medical staff and nurses at NCH, the staff of the NCH Diplomat program, the medical staff at Moorings Park, Dr. David Linz, Nurse Sara Walther, to Dr. Helene Freeman for her many years of care and Fr. George Ratzman and Fr. Steve Clemente for their support and devotion.
A funeral mass for Joseph will be held Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. William Catholic Church, 601 Seagate Drive, Naples, Florida 34108.
