Marion Pincus Stein

Pinky, as she was known to her friends, attended New Rochelle, NY schools and graduated from Bard College. Following marriage, she settled in Holyoke, MA. For over 25 years, she wrote a weekly ski column, The Lift Line by Pinky Stein, for the Holyoke Transcript Telegram. She authored numerous travel articles and joined other ski writers on overseas trips with the International Ski Writers Association.

Pinky was passionate about civil rights and social justice issues, including women’s rights and the right to vote. Throughout her life, she championed community service, and she served as President of the Holyoke League of Women Voters and the Holyoke Hospital Auxiliary Association. Governor Michael Dukakis appointed her to the Massachusetts State Tramway Board. She was a long-time volunteer at many organizations in the communities where she lived.

A lover of the arts, she was Chair of Docent Training for the Armand Hammer Private Art Exhibit in Holyoke. She served for many years as a docent at the Mt. Holyoke College and Springfield MA art museums and volunteered at the Baker Museum of Artis-Naples.

To foster cross-cultural connections, she led a group of teenagers to Argentina in the 1960’s and hosted many Mt. Holyoke College international exchange students. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively abroad with her beloved husband of 71 years. They took their last overseas trip to Paris to celebrate their 65th anniversary.

Pinky was known for her warmth, congeniality, zest for life, and lasting friendships. She loved entertaining and was a gracious hostess. An avid tennis player until 88, she enjoyed reading, swimming, skiing, and bridge. She kept abreast of current events and discussed them daily with her family. Her greatest joys were spending time with family and friends.

She leaves behind daughters Margo Stein of Naples, FL, Kathie Stein of Rockville, MD, and Susan Stein-Black of Oakland, CA (John Black), granddaughter Jasma Rose Gurung Stein of Rockville, MD, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Her husband Ken, parents Harry and Rose Pincus, and sister Felice Tillman predeceased her.

A graveside service will be held July 24, 2026, in Naples, FL and a celebration of life will be held later.
