

Mary Jane graduated from Binghamton Central High School and attended Sweet Briar College. She was a society reporter for The Binghamton Press. In 1945 she married Carleton Armstrong Cleveland, Jr.
She was a lifetime member of West Presbyterian Church and was ordained as an Elder 1962; Associate member, United Church of Marco Island, FL; Trustee Member, Moorings Presbyterian Church, Naples, FL. Community involvement included Binghamton Girls’ Club, Inc., President; Board of Directors, Girls’ Clubs of America; Junior League of Binghamton, Inc., President; Regional Nominating Committee, Association of Junior Leagues of America, Watrous Bowl award for Volunteer community service; Broome County Social Planning Council, Vice President; Broome County United Fund/United Way, Board of Directors; Campaign Fund Committee; Chairman Budget and Agency Relations Committee for Building Centered Agencies; Member New York State Committee of One Hundred delegates to the White House Conference on Children and Youth 1960. Member of Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Social Services; Good Shepherd-Fairview Home, Inc., Building Chairman, Board President.
Mary Jane became a Florida resident in 1986, with permanent residence established in 1988 on Marco Island, and moved to Moorings Park Retirement Community in Naples in 2004. She continued to volunteer with Bargain Basket for 15 years and was a program worker and served on the Board of Directors at Immokalee Child Care Center, and was a member of the Board of Directors of The Moorings, Inc. (1986-1989).
Survivors include her loving husband of 73 years, Carleton Armstrong Cleveland, Jr.; her children, Carleton A. Cleveland, III (Linda) of Naples, FL and daughter, Barbara Land Cleveland of Hillsboro, OR; Four grandchildren: Wilson Cleveland of Los Angeles, CA, Adrienne Hannis (Dan) of Chicago, IL, Hannah Hall (Ron) of Beaverton, OR, and Daniel Miller (Shannon) of San Rafael, CA; two great-grandchildren, Wallace Hall and Rosemary Hannis.
The family conveys gratitude to the staff of Moorings Park and Avow Hospice for their care.
A Celebration of Life will be held, Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM in Bower Chapel at Moorings Park, 130 Moorings Park Dr., Naples, FL 34105.
