Nicholas David Meyer

Nick was born on January 25, 1932 in Gettysburg, PA, the son of Emanuel and Josephine (Lehman) Meyer. He grew up with his two sisters in Biglerville, PA and Chevy Chase, DC and graduated from the Sidwell Friends’ School. Nick received his BS in Economics from Swarthmore College in 1953.

He met his wife of 71 years, Barbara Smalley at Swarthmore and they were married September 11, 1954.

After two years of military service stationed at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, they settled in the Philadelphia area. Nick worked for Hornblower & Weeks and A.H. Williams. & Co., before starting his own municipal bond firm, N.D. Meyer and Co. Barbara served as his back office manager. He was the President of the

Municipal Bond Club of Philadelphia. Following their retirement, they moved to Moss Creek in South Carolina for 20 years and then to Marco Island and Naples, Florida.

A lifelong golfer, Nick played on the Swarthmore College team, challenged himself at numerous courses over the years and was fondly known as ‘the walker’ at Bentley Village where he played, carrying his bag, almost every day for many years. Over his lifetime, he had 27 holes in one. Discovering a love of tennis later in life, he was a member the Moss Creek tennis team, the SC State Super Senior 3.0 Champion for three years.

For over 50 years, Nick and Barbara were members of the Fairview Lake community in TaVon, PA. Nick established ‘Nick’s Ski School’ and taught his children and grandchildren along with numerous friends to waterski. If you made it once around the lake, you received a signed certificate of achievement. He was an enthusiastic sailor racing their Javelin, The Orange Crush with FLA Fleet 7, and serving as the go to source for sailing rules interpretation.

Nick had an unyielding commitment to family, evidenced by numerous family reunions in Pennsylvania and West Virginia where he remained the undisputed ping pong champion. His ‘swimming pool lap challenge’ to earn lifesavers is still remembered today.

Even more importantly, he was a strong proponent of the value of education and continued his family’s tradition of supporting the educational endeavors of his children, grandchildren, and his employees.

Mr. Meyer is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Meyer, and his three daughters, Katherine Meyer of Warren, VT; Susan Meyer Bach (Andy) of Charlotte, NC; and Elizabeth Meyer Sovia of Pottstown, PA. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Timothy Meyer Bach (Lara); Kelly Bach; Sarah Sovia Boris (Storm); and Rho Sovia.
