Shirley Pedigo, 94, of Miami Florida’s Redlands farming community, peacefully passed away on July 8, 2026. Born in Albany, New York in 1931 to Clifford and Alta M. Whitney. The second of two children, she was predeceased by her brother, Clifford H Whitney, of Prescott Arizona. After graduating from Union University Albany College of Pharmacy, she worked in the Hematology Department at the Albany Medical Hospital. Through conversations with patients, she developed a fascination and desire to see the World. Due to her medical training, Shirley was hired as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines. Shortly into her career she met and married the love of her life, Joe Pedigo, a pilot flying for the airline. After marriage, Shirley retired from Eastern to focus on raising her three children. She is survived by her children; Scott Pedigo, John Pedigo (Karen), Barbara (Pedigo) Gradin and her six grandchildren Caleb, Emma, Violet, Sammy, Josh, and Zachary Gradin. One of Shirley’s biggest lifelong passions was for equestrian events. What began as a weekend hobby riding with friends in local parades and rodeo pre-shows as a member of the Homestead Everglades Posse, quickly evolved to actively participating with her daughter Barbara, in national competitive horse show events. At one point Shirley was rated top ten in the nation in Amateur Seat Equitation & Western Horsemanship. She eventually rose to being President of the Western Horse Association of Florida and later the President of the Florida Amateur Quarter Horse Association. Shirley was always a strong and vocal advocate for her children and friends within the community. In addition to being an active Den mother for Boy and Girl Scout events, she loved to stop at almost any roadside flea market to shop for interesting antiques. Shirley’s compassion and advocacy for animals will be missed throughout the community.
