

Helyn A. Malay, 98, of Nashua, NH passed away on Friday, February 01, 2013 at the Fairview Nursing Home, Hudson, NH. She was born in Nashua on July 15, 1914, daughter of the late Joseph and Marcella (Wolkovich) Sedlewicz. Mrs. Malay graduated from Nashua High School, Class of 1932 and then attended Nashua Business College for two years. Following graduation she went to work for Hayward Farms as a bookkeeper. During WWII she took over a milk route for the dairy, going back to bookkeeping following the war.
Mrs. Malay was a lifelong resident of Nashua, except for 17 of her 98 years when she lived in South Carolina, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, returning to Nashua in 1980. She was a communicant of Church of the Resurrection.
One of her proudest moments was when she received the 2007 Spirit of New Hampshire Award in the Senior category for making a difference in the lives of young children. She was a member of the Pen Pal Program, a program which pairs senior volunteers with third graders. She also joined the literacy program at Ledge Street School and read to the children on a regular basis. She gathered some of the senior pen pals and other interested volunteers to begin the “Yarn It All” group to knit hats, mittens and scarves for the Ledge Street School as well as others.
Mrs. Malay also enjoyed knitting, reading and was a member of the “Nashua Mall Walkers.” Family holidays were very special times for her and she loved spending the time with her family and being involved in the lives of her grandchildren. As a resident of Fairview Nursing Home she enjoyed numerous activities and events.
She is survived by a daughter; Eleanore Malay Bradley of West Chester, PA, by Shirley Brothers who was like a daughter to her, by two grandchildren; Andrew John Bradley of Orlando, FL and Lauren Marcella Bradley of Philadelphia, PA and by several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; John Malay in 1988, a daughter; Marcella M. Malay in 2004, two brothers; Joseph and Leopold Sullivan and four sisters; Doris Hayward, Sophia Foley and her husband Malcolm, Mary K. Sullivan and Bernice C. Zis and her husband Stanley.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 4, 2013 in the Parish of the Resurrection, 449 Broad St., Nashua. Friends and family are asked to gather at the church. Private interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Hudson, NH. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Parish of the Resurrection, 449 Broad St., Nashua, NH 03063.
